![]() Source: I have a light history with auto mechanical work, a small group of friends with more experience than me and my parents have more than 38 years combined in auto parts/mechanical auto repair and mechanical engineering experience together - they constantly feed me advice. I would not take it back to the oil change place personally. If the original written quote and the third party agree with an issue its fairly safe to say that repair may be needed. ![]() This inspection you will want to pay for($60-120) dollars likely depending on local COL - with this inspection, assuming an honest mechanic, you are paying for a good inspection - NOT BS. Then Seek a mechanic someone you know trusts, use nextdoor.ect if you need better non biased options. If they are insistent continue to be polite, ask for a written quote of the issues and say you will be back later that day or tomorrow. Politely decline everything they offer besides the oil change you went for. They test almost all patrons to test their auto knowledge bu unfortunately it's easy to spot someone who is not mechanically inclined and anxious to have a reliable vehicle. ![]() They rely on suggesting overpriced fixes for things that may or may not be needed. These places don't make money doing oil changes, at least not with conventional oil and they definitely lose money on labor costs to an authentic "70" point inspection just too tell you everything is good to go. Do you really believe its just a simple coincidence you have been putting off this oil change for the last two weeks or more and these good ol boys caught it just in time before it was too late to repair? Possible but not likely. They may identify a valid issue but they may pressure you by saying your car is basically not going to make it home if you don't do X Y and Z. (IMPORTANT) Edit: If you take your car into Jiffy/Meineke/Valvoline(valvoline isnt that cheap anymore so maybe ignore this brand) or any other place that revolves around cheap oil changes - don't believe any repairs they suggest. BUT anyone who doesn't know much about auto repairs and understanding please see below. I was luckily very aware of my last cars oil burning/leaking existence, and topping off that 98 engine definitely never broke the bank but this is still a good point.
